Toyota has achieved a historic milestone in the Supercars Championship with Ryan Wood delivering their breakthrough victory at Taupō International Motorsport Park, marking the fastest path to success for any new manufacturer in the series' history.

Wood's dominant performance in Race 9 secured Toyota's maiden podium-topper in just their ninth race attempt, surpassing all previous records for debut manufacturer success in Australian touring car racing.

The Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver was visibly emotional following his second career victory on home soil. "I'm so incredibly proud of our team, what we've done with this beautiful car, to win in our third round is pretty special," said Wood in victory lane.

"Big thank you to Mobil 1 Truck Assist Racing as always, this is incredible, I can't believe it, sorry about all of my emotion, it just means so much," he continued. "To do it at home in front of so many friends and family and supporters of mine is so incredible."

Starting from Toyota's maiden pole position, Wood controlled the early phases of the 200km race, building on his previous race-leading experience from Sydney Motorsport Park earlier in the season.

The decisive moment came during the final pit stop sequence, where Chaz Mostert emerged as the race leader, creating a tense situation for the Toyota camp. "How that played out is probably not ideal, you're leading the race," said Walkinshaw TWG Racing team principal Bruce Stewart.

"Certainly, we had a little bit longer with the fuel on Woody's car; there was a lot of negotiation and chatting going on between the engineers," Stewart explained. "I don't think we expected it… I think when it popped out, everyone had a bit of a 'holy hell' moment."

Wood responded under pressure, executing a decisive pass on Mostert with eight laps remaining to reclaim the race lead. Broc Feeney also capitalized on the situation, moving past the reigning champion to secure second place for Triple Eight Race Engineering.

Mostert ultimately settled for third position, ahead of Will Brown in fourth. Matt Payne, Brodie Kostecki, James Golding, Kai Allen, Cameron Waters, and Anton De Pasquale rounded out the top ten finishers.

The weekend's racing schedule has been significantly impacted by severe weather conditions, with Sunday's on-track activities cancelled due to the approaching Cyclone Vaianu. The championship will now move to Christchurch, where Race 10 will take place on Friday as part of the venue's Supercars debut.

Earlier in the day, Brodie Kostecki had claimed victory in Race 8, setting up what was expected to be a competitive weekend of racing before weather intervened. The Toyota breakthrough adds another layer of excitement to what has already proven to be an unpredictable 2026 championship campaign.
