LAS VEGAS - For a while, Saturday's NASCAR O'Reilly Series race turned into a mentor-versus-protege showdown for the lead between a pair of nearly identical HendrickCars.com Chevrolets. And though the youngster continues to impress in his first full season, score another win for the veteran. Corey Day came home with his fourth-consecutive, top-10 finish in the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy, leading nine laps in stage three en route to eighth place. Kyle Larson , driving the No. 88 Chevy for JR Motorsports, was able to take advantage of a late restart in claiming the win. Larson, who like Day, comes from a dirt-racing background, has long since been a champion of Day's potential. Both have already scored dirt wins in Las Vegas this week in the High Limits Racing series. On Saturday, the two traded positions and raced around each other nearly all day on Saturday and Larson was impressed with the continued development of the 20-year-old. I don't know if you could see on-boards of him but he was sideways. It was cool to see." After starting 11th , Day quickly ascended into the top 10 where he would become a fixture for the rest of the race. Quiet and steady, Day slow rose from there, picking up three points in stage two via eighth-place finish and four tallies with a seventh-place showing in stage two. A trio of cautions would fly in the segment, and they allowed Day to inch forward as several competitors around him had issues. With 60 laps to go, Day took a run off the high side and slipped past Taylor Gray for the lead, where he stayed for nine laps until another yellow flag flew when Gray and Sheldon Creed got together. Three cars stayed on the race track and Day came off pit road second among those who came for service. Cars on older tires at the front of the field created a chaotic restart. Larson restarted third in line on the bottom but was able to get to the outside as the front congested and accelerate into the lead. Day followed but couldn't find a way around Larson, eventually fading a bit but hanging on for another strong showing. Once in clean air, Larson stretched his lead to three seconds over the field before cruising to the victory.
